Fumin Zhang
Dr. Fumin Zhang is a Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He received a PhD degree in 2004 from the University of Maryland (College Park) in Electrical Engineering, and held a postdoctoral position in Princeton University from 2004 to 2007. His research interests include mobile sensor networks, maritime robotics, control systems, and theoretical foundations for cyber-physical systems. He received the NSF CAREER Award in September 2009, the Lockheed Inspirational Young Faculty Award in March 2010, the ONR Young Investigator Program Award in April 2010, and the GT Roger P. Webb Outstanding Junior Faculty Award in April 2011. He is currently serving as the co-chair for the IEEE RAS Technical Committee on Marine Robotics, and the chair for the IEEE CSS Technical Committee on Robotic Control and Manufacturing Automation.
Ph. D. Students
Paul Varnell
Paul Varnell is a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering studying under Dr. Fumin Zhang with a focus in control theory and robotics. He received his B.S. degree in 2009 from Georgia Tech and then worked at Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) on the Yellowfin underwater vehicle before enrolling in the Georgia Tech Ph.D. program. His research includes topics relating to computational tools for robust control, the influence of communication on control, environmental sensing, and human-computer interaction.
Sean Maxon
Sean received his B.S. and M.S. from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2011 and 2015 and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the school of Electrical and Computer Engineering, studying under Dr. Fumin Zhang in the Georgia Tech Systems Research lab. His research focus is on multi-hop network routing for mobile robots operating in communication-constrained environments.
Vivek K Mishra
Vivek is a PhD student in Georgia Institute of Technology, working under Dr. Fumin Zhang in Georgia Tech Systems Research Lab. Vivek completed his undergraduate studies in Electrical engineering from National Institute of Technology, Bhopal, India in 2011. Currently Vivek is working on projects: Design & Control of an indoor blimp and Plume tracking algorithm for multi agent robot systems.
Mengxue Hou
Mengxue received her B.S. from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering in 2016. She is currently a Ph.D. student majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering and is working under Dr. Fumin Zhang in Georgia Tech Systems Research Lab. Her current research project focuses on path planning for underwater vehicle in spatial and temporal varying ocean flow field, and on data-driven ocean flow modelling and prediction.
Tony X Lin
Tony is currently a Robotics Engineering Ph.D. student studying under Dr. Fumin Zhang and Dr. Sam Coogan. He received his B.S. degree in 2016 and his M.S. degree in 2018 from the University of Virginia. His research includes topics related to the verification of autonomous behavior, multi-robot collaborations, and sensing and estimation.
Ziqiao Zhang
Ziqiao is currently an Electrical and Computer Engineering Ph.D. student studying under Dr. Fumin Zhang. She received her B.S. degree in Automation from Sichuan University in 2018. Her current research project focuses on long short-term memory and data-driven control.
Yingke Li
Yingke is currently a Robotics Ph.D. student studying under Dr. Fumin Zhang. She received her B.S. degree in Automation from Tsinghua University in 2019. Her current research interests lie within Bayesian Learning Model Predictive Control, Bayesian Risk Optimization, Optimal Search Theory, and Human-Robot Interaction.
Scott Mayberry
Scott is currently a Robotics Ph.D. student studying under Dr. Fumin Zhang. He received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2018. His research involves biomimetic soft sensing, acoustic communication, and open-source underwater robotics.
Junkai Wang
Junkai is currently an Electrical and Computer Engineering Ph.D. student studying under Dr. Fumin Zhang. He received his bachelor’s degree in Automation from Beihang University in 2019 and Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2021. His current research interests include the analysis and design of robotic control systems.
Ruochu Yang
Ruochu is currently an Electrical and Computer Engineering Ph.D. student studying under Dr. Fumin Zhang. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Artificial Intelligence from Nankai University in 2019 and Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2021. His research interests include Robotic Control Systems and Visual SLAM.
Shengkang Chen
Shengkang is currently a Robotics Ph.D. student studying under Dr. Fumin Zhang and Dr. Ronald C. Arkin. He received his B.S. degree in 2017 and his M.S. degree in 2019 from the University of California, Los Angeles. His current research project focuses on multi-robot coordination and human-robot interaction.
Posdoctoral Researchers
Said Al-Abri
Said is currently a postdoctoral researcher under Dr. Fumin Zhang. He earned his Ph.D degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2019. He earned his M.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Central Florida in 2013 and B.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Sultan Qaboos University in 2009. He has a teaching experience at Sultan Qaboos University in the periods of 2009-2011 and 2013-2014. His current research focus is on multi-agent control of bio-inspired source seeking strategies and applications of control in communication systems.
Jia Guo
Jia is currently a postdoc fellow under the supervision of Dr. Fumin Zhang. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. His former advisor is Dr. Andrew J. Kurdila. He graduated from Harbin Institute of Technology with an M.Eng. in 2016 and a B.E. in 2014, both in Aerospace Engineering. His research interests include adaptive control and estimation, data-driven modeling of dynamical systems, kernel methods, and bio-inspired robots.
